Rome is so very beautiful, and as someone who has not yet been, I thought it might be a cool idea to romanticise a trip there. I do have plans to go soon so this post is both romanticising and motivating me to organise my trip.
Read on to explore my Italian bucket list!
1. have a cappuccino at breakfast at a cute little cafe
I’m not even a massive fan of cappuccinos but surely going to Italy means that I should give an authentic cappuccino a go! My parents particularly like them because they are nice and frothy, which makes them easy to drink without burning your tongue.
Also, how sweet would it be to drink a hot coffee in the morning whilst looking out on a Roman cobbled street? Add a crispy warm croissant and I’m completely sold.
2. explore the city whilst listening to a playlist i made whilst planning
The city is filled with so many historical places that are must-sees and I think it would just be so fun to walk around and explore the local areas whilst listening to music that matches the atmosphere. Some places that I’m most excited about seeing in Rome currently is the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum.
I already walk quite a bit and I literally can’t not have music in my ears, so it would be a good idea to create a Spotify playlist in advance so I don’t have to worry about what to listen to there.
To be very honest, I can fully envision, like, a whole Pinterest-y image of myself in Rome doing this.
Hair up. In a long floral milkmaid dress. With oval-shaped sunglasses. Brown sandals. And wired earphones.
It’s a strangely specific vision but it’s truly a roma-ntic dream. (Is this pun getting old yet?)
3. visit cute souvenir stores and get myself a tote bag
One thing that I’m super excited to do whilst in Rome is to definitely explore all the small stores located within Rome! Having looked on TikTok at all the potential souvenir shops I could go to, one that caught my eye and was feature by a lot of creators was one that was owned by an artist named Marcel (the shop’s name was Gran Cafè Marcel). He creates art inspired by his daily life in Rome and what caught my eye specifically was that he prints his art onto tote bags!
Now to describe my relationship with tote bags… would be short because it’s just that I use them. But last year, I went on an amazing holiday to New York and I came back with a tote bag that featured the Statue of Liberty. And to say I am obsessed with it is an understatement because not only do I love the print on it, but it’s so functional and useful. Since then (though my current collection is only one), I made up my mind to create a collection of tote bags from the foreign countries I visit. Let’s just say Marcel’s souvenir store is one of many that will be visited!
My family ritual when travelling abroad is to always bring back magnets, so that will most definitely be bought as well. I am keen on bringing back some wall prints as well , so that’s something that I will keep an eye out for too.
4. catch the sunset (and sunrise?) in rome
Something I think is super roma-ntic is seeing the sunset when one is on holiday. There’s just something so beautiful about slowing down and taking a moment to take in the view as the sun lies down to rest. Though I would’ve definitely loved seeing the sunset on my previous holidays as well, I find that in the excitement and rush of fulfilling the itinerary, you often forget to include simple moments like this. That is why, this time, I am also scheduling in at least one night where I catch the sunset in Rome.
One specific place that I think would be amazing to catch the sunset would be at a rooftop bar near the Colosseum so you can enjoy a picturesque view. Imagine the photos there?!
Seeing the sunrise is also a huge wish of mine wherever I go, but if I take my sleeping habits into account, I really doubt how willing I will be to wake up and see it. By the time my alarm rings, I am a totally different person from the one of the night before who set it. So with that in mind, I wouldn’t bank on me seeing it at all (crying emoji).
5. take a polaroid at the trevi fountain at night
I think the most exciting place for me that I can’t wait to see in Rome is the Trevi Fountain. Not only is it so so pretty, but the night view looks so insane that I’m convinced that seeing it live will somehow alter my brain chemistry.
This year I have been trying to take lots of polaroids on important days and milestones, but to be honest, I have been slacking lately… But, hopefully, I will take it to Rome when I go and take the most beautiful shots in front of the fountain with the night lights.
Through some TikToks, I also learnt about a superstition with the Trevi fountain which is that you can make a wish by throwing a coin over your left shoulder with your right hand. I’m not sure about the origins of this tradition, but as someone who loves lore like this, you bet I will be doing this!
to end this post…
Rome will be expecting me! To say the least.
I think there is a lot more that can be said about this trip, like what outfits and food I’m so excited to try. But for now, this is all I can think of. I can’t describe how excited I am to go to Rome; however, if I were to try, I would say that I can’t wait to engrave my mind with a million memories and take as many photos as I can so I can then go back to relive the sensation.
I feel like this description was kind of crazy, considering the fact that I literally have not been!
Til next time.
